Nightingale
On Thursday 1 February 2018 Edwin Oudshoorn presented his spring / summer 2018 couture collection 'Nightingale' in the raw environment of De Marktkantine in Amsterdam.
The collection consists of 42 looks, ranging from transparent, fragile evening dresses to shimmering short looks with extravagant embroidery and striking combinations of fabrics and textures. Although the signature of Oudshoorn is clearly present in the form of rich colors and smart patterns, the collection also contains a fresh look that is less expected from the couturier. It is reminiscent of 1920's dresses with geometric shapes, combined with typical 1970's colors, straight silhouettes and high zoom lines. Tones of gold, silver and black are mixed with different shades of teal blue, green, yellow and white.
Oudshoorn's love of fabrics is clearly visible throughout the collection and specifically in the looks where different contrasting fabrics are combined, creating an exciting and unexpected atmosphere. Models floated past in transparent corsets, draped with different layers of tulle, embroidered birds and hundreds of beads and crystals. This is closely followed by shiny jacquard fabrics that are tailored to smart suits and billowing evening dresses.
The looks are combined with jewelery - made in collaboration with goldsmith Digna Gorkovoi - that reflect the bird motif in polished brass. The make-up of the models, created by Lydia le Loux, is clean and fresh so as not to distract from the strong looks. The hair, created by Margot van Essen, is clean and tight with knotted braids and finished with bondage tape.

Soft pastel colours, Victorian influences and feminine silhouettes are reminiscent of a day at the sea, while soft flowing silks, architectural raffia and intricate pleating are combined with hand embroidered gowns encrusted with 3D printed details, silver, gold and diamonds combined with plastic, wood, crystal and lace. Tailored suits, flowing gowns and outlandish embroideries deliver a vision which is both kitsch, dramatic and elegant with a definite ethereal beauty.
The show was a feast for the senses, with a dramatic and ethereal music score and the imposing setting of the Residence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Paris providing the backdrop.
A story symbolizing the quest for perfection, and the restrictions this imposes on the seeker. But also the inscrutability of life, maturity, resignation, and finding this where you were not looking.
For the bespoke precious gold, silver and 3D printed pieces used in this collection, Edwin Oudshoorn approached House of Eléonore and suggested a collaboration. Working together with their creative director Ray Steele and goldsmith Digna Gorkovoi, Edwin has developed a series of elements which run through the collection.

Een Kunstmatig Paradijs; Symbolisch voor het keurslijf dat streven naar perfectie met zich meebrengt. Want wie zich volmaaktheid tot doel stelt, heeft ook onuitgesproken verwachtingen over anderen en blijft krampachtig binnen de door zichzelf gestelde grenzen. Als een nachtegaaltje gekooid.
Tegelijkertijd vereist het keurslijf creativiteit; het wringt, vraagt om het opzoeken van grenzen en leidt tot het – al dan niet kunstmatig – creëren van bewegingsruimte.
Inspiratie genoeg om deze tweestrijd te vangen in zijn collectie. Daarbij komt ongekunstelde precisie goed van pas. Opnieuw vertoont Edwin patroontechnische kunsten en laat hij zijn jurken – ultrakort, keurig op de knie of slepend lang – in de juiste plooi vallen. Daarbij vindt hij ruimte voor borduursels, Swarovski-stenen en – verwijzend naar zijn object van schoonheid – veren. Het korset is uit deze collectie ook zeker niet weg te denken; elegant, wonderschoon, maar bovenal: het keurslijf zélf.

Wie leeft brandt zijn vingers, zijn vleugels en zijn hart.
Vanuit het diepste zwart van liefdes- of levensverdriet, bezien we het verleden: Een kleurrijke herinnering aan onschuld: vlinders en regenbogen.
Die onbezonnenheid komt niet meer terug.
Het zwart vormt ons, brengt ons openbaringen. En uiteindelijk verenigt het zich met de kleurrijke jeugd in het verleden.
Berusting maakt van liefdesverdriet levensvreugde, met nieuwe kennis en een breed kleurenpalet gaan we voort.
In totaal vertaalden 21 sets - het verhaal ‘Remembered Colours’. De collectie begint in de lente, groen en blauw in de achtergrond. Je hoort de vogels in de muziek, alles is fris en onbezonnen. Dan verandert alles, er is storm op komst. De collectie oogt donker en verbrand. Aan het eind van de collectie komt er toch weer licht; donkere wolken blijven niet hangen. De collectie is een reis door het leven.
